Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the role. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood, for fear of the impact stress might affect their child. Perry claims she never wanted to be an actor in high school, but she decided to begin playing as a way to make friends during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry made her debut as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a stage actress. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer prize-winning film Anna Christie alongside her in the year 2015. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. Her father played her character in her role on the ABC drama Scandal. In addition, she played in the role of a younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The character was chosen by auditions, even having a strong connection with it.
